What is an Editor?

When I think of an editor, I envision a person who revises documents for “errors” in grammar, content, structure, organization, accessibility, research/citations, clarity, and purpose (to name a few categories). Therefore, an editor has a strong understanding of higher and lower order concerns when it comes to reviewing a document. Editors are comfortable with reading, writing, and working with different types of texts/documents. They usually have prior experience with editing, whether it be for a newspaper, academic journal, or magazine; this experience gives them the credibility and confidence for working as a professional editor.
I also imagine editors working as a part of a team. They consult with social media specialists, writers, readers, managers, experts, etc. to ensure the document gets published or reaches the desired audience. Constant communication is important for editors and others to establish the same goals and understandings about the documents they are responsible for. Editors rely on others to help them when needed, whether it’s proving extra information about an unfamiliar subject or double-checking the correct citation style. Editors must also think about the many types of audiences their documents will reach. Editors should strive to consult with members from the intended audience as well. typically think of editors working in an office, at a desk with both physical and digital documents.
I also think there are many different types of editors. The first few that come to mind work with: newspapers, publishing houses, and technical fields. Editors may work for different companies and the content of the documents may vary. However, editors share the same purposes and goals: producing effective documents that meet their readers' expectations. I think editors can work in a variety of fields as well, from science to technology to literature to the fine arts. No matter what type or genre a document may be, it should be reviewed by an editor before publication. I think most editors enjoy writing, reading, and revising. They want to help make people’s lives easier. Editors understand the importance and significance of words, whether those words be found onscreen or in print. Editors hope that the document will meet the requirements and needs of those who read it; they want to do anything in their power to achieve that goal.

  1. Honestly, Maria, you are an editorial powerhouse! From your work in Tech Comm to this first blog post, I see the quality, thoughtfulness, pacing, and care that you put into your writing.

I especially appreciate your understanding of the social and capacious nature of editorial work.

Finally, consider amping your posts with images (to create an immediate tone and draw readerly interest), hyperlinks (for definitions and examples), and maybe consider embedding videos!
